The 5 Worst Things Found By X Ray Technicians

/ On : 9/04/2011/ .

The dog ate some magnets. Your kid fell on a butter knife and impaled himself. A guy gets stabbed, leaving a blade sticking from the side of his skull as he casually shrugs it off all the way to the hospital. These horror stories were a nightmare to watch, but they make for some pretty cool stories for an X Ray technician to tell. The best souvenir from an ordeal regarding inedible objects inappropriately appearing inside one’s body is keeping the X-rays from the event. It beats trying to steal one of those dinky oxygen gauges. Here are 6 weird and terrible X-rays which reveal life-threatening objects embedded into sensitive human bodies.

1 – Calm Down Bro, It’s Just a Knife in my Skull

Truly badass Sgt. Dan Powers struggled for only a moment against an insurgent in the streets of Baghdad. He won the short fight but had been sucker punched in the side of his head. As he tried to shake it off, a medic told him to “leave the knife in.” It wasn’t until then that Powers realized he had been stabbed in the side of the head and was seeping blood all over himself from the wound. Powers felt no pain besides the sensation that he had been ‘punched’; the brain has no pain sensory nerves, which allowed him to to stay conscious and coherent as he was flown to a state-of-the-art hospital nearby. He even spoke to his wife on the phone, reassuring her as the knife sat four inches deep in his skull. The X-ray showed how close he had been to death: the knife was impossibly close to his temporal lobe as well as a cluster of important veins in his sinus cavities. A long operation to open his head and remove the blade was successful and Powers made a full recovery. The Army was even kind enough to ship the knife to his wife, who was appalled at the gift.

2 – Jesus Forces Baby to Stab Self in Face

Deeply religious but somewhat neglectful parents of a year-and-a-half old toddler were horrified to find their son impaled on a set of car keys. After hearing a strange cry from the other room, Staci Holderman rushed to her son’s side and found two keys embedded in his face — one in his brain and one in his eye. A frantic call to 911 brought help which rushed him via helicopter to the hospital. The X-ray is scary enough on its own, and everyone involved said it was a nightmare to see in person. Although doctors initially thought that little Nicholas would never regain vision in his eye because the key had ‘flattened it’, he’s made a full recovery and can see clearly. Staci Holderman puts a little less faith in the doctors, claiming ‘The Lord’ saved her son instead. Hopefully The Lord can guide her on the path to hiding all of her sharp objects well away from her kids.

3 – Dude, Where’s My Pair of Surgical Scissors?

After a surgery on her womb, Anne was not making the recovery she had hoped for. She was plagued by abdominal pains for five months after the surgery, making her life in France miserable as she struggled to feel better. Anne finally went to the hospital for X-rays after a coughing fit pierced her navel with a shard of metal coming from inside of her body. The X-rays revealed that the doctors had dropped a pair of surgical scissors into her abdomen during surgery — and left them there. She was stitched up and sent on her way with the metal lodged inside of her, stretching almost four inches long. Anne has recovered and a lawsuit is in the works.

4 – Dogs are Stupid

When you’re a dog, it can be hard to figure out what is and isn’t safe to eat. Everything just tastes so good. Sophie, a Colorado Basset Hound, couldn’t resist the sharp metallic taste of nails. She ate 31 of them before she was finally finished, topping the meal off with a dessert of housing shingles and her own nametag. Sophie’s owner took her to the vet after noticing her puppy’s post-munchies discomfort, and the X-ray revealed that maybe someone should have been paying more attention to this dingus dog. Sophie’s X-ray may look terrible, but she’s made a full recovery. Sophie’s story was eventually trumpd by Isis, a Mastiff puppy whose X-ray showed a meal of over 100 pennies.

5 – Girls are Stupid, Too

Teenage girls and their self-mutilation trends are only becoming dumber and dumber. Self-embedding is the act of inserting objects such as staples, small shards of glass or metal, or even crayon pieces under the skin. Embedded objects typically have to be removed by surgery, or can be left to fester and become infested if the person is feeling particularly self-destructive. This trend is performed dominantly by females, and has inspired a new type of surgery to help remove the objects without damaging their stupid little bodies. Small incisions are made and a live X-ray is performed while forceps are carefully guided into the body to remove the objects. On average, girls who self-embed will make about three hospital trips to remove the objects.

6 – Anything to Get Out

Prisoners in North Carolina hate being behind bars so much that they’ll swallow objects like bed springs and batteries — just to get a special trip out of their cell and into the ER. Hospital food is awful, so prison food must be absolutely deplorable. One can only imagine the conditions under which a person would consider a trip to the hospital ‘a vacation’. However, it makes sense: besides the food, there are new people to meet, new surroundings, and most likely a better window to look out of. Besides, when else does a prisoner get to be waited on hand and foot?
